And we've written about that. Mr. They were, in fact, undercover spies who had been building a cover as eager Democrats when, in fact, they were anything but that. This is FRESH AIR. A former British spy and Republican mega-donor Erik Prince, a founder of the private military contractor Blackwater (now rebranded as "Academi) and brother to former U.S. Education Secretary. It is, instead, an entity dedicated to a specific political agenda.. So Erik Prince, the private security contractor who is an ally and avid supporter of President Trump, connects with Project Veritas, who does these videos, and then they develop this whole different operation. DAVIES: This is FRESH AIR. Blackwater Worldwide founder Erik Prince is considering a Republican primary challenge to Wyoming Senator John Barrasso, a senior member of the Senate GOP leadership team, in a race that could pit the party's establishment against insurgents inspired by allies of President Donald Trump. Mr. Seddon was not. Prince took on the role of celebrity pitchman, according to interviews and documents, raising money for Mr. Seddons spying operation, which was aimed at gathering dirt that could discredit politicians and activists in several states. And, I mean, they were both active, but she was literally, you know, infiltrating these Democratic groups. if( width > 480 ){ And if they were given money, if the money was distributed by this former spy, Richard Seddon, and they pulled from that pot of money, which was part of that operation, that could also be problematic. So O'Keefe's Instagram photo, you know, led people to realize that, you know, Prince had played a role, at least in letting Project Veritas use the ranch for training. We'll talk more about his stories on undercover operations by conservatives to infiltrate Democratic and progressive groups after a short break. Seddon left the project in 2018, before O'Keefe started releasing low-impact "unmasking the deep state" videos. DAVIES: Right. GOLDMAN: Well, they - you know, they - Beau is from Cody, Wyo., so he had some Wyoming roots. Set some context for us here. DAVIES: Right. We still don't know everything about it, and we're trying to learn more about exactly who was behind this and if money was paid and so on. But I think - you would think that Democrats and Republicans would all be united, that this is a bipartisan issue, right? To win his case, Prince will ultimately have to show the story was false and he may also have to prove the publication knew the story was false or showed a reckless disregard as to whether it was accurate. I also think that - I think recently, too, O'Keefe, did a photo op or made a video with Donald Trump. He's a former British intelligence officer who served in Washington, D.C., and in Pakistan and eventually leaves the British Secret Intelligence Service and develops some relationship with Erik Prince, a security contractor, and ends up being director of field operations at the conservative group known as Project Veritas. But what we know is there was an arrangement made, and Erik Prince allowed Project Veritas to use his farm to train its operatives. GOLDMAN: It's my understanding that they met during a training at the Prince ranch in Wyoming in the spring of '17 and then grew closer over time. And then on a parallel but different track, you know, Sofia is trying to make her way through the Young Democrats of Wyoming, the Wyoming Democratic Party, you know, building her bona fides as an eager, young Democrat. And they - you know, I think they - it seemed like they were seeking revenge. And they will get, you know, negative information from public records. Oct. 21, 2020. And they both say they didnt interview anyone in the state for the article. While the state is currently solidly Republican, Mr. Seddon and Ms. Gore believed it was in danger of turning toward the Democrats, as Colorado has. They targeted somebody from the Justice Department, and I wrote they also targeted FBI employees. The plan was reportedly to send a female operative to Tosca, a restaurant McMaster frequented, to engage him in drinks and conversation and record him disparaging Trump or making other inappropriate remarks on camera. Erik Prince decides that Project Veritas needs something new. We'll continue our conversation in just a moment. He's a reporter for The New York Times. Mr. DAVIES: And when we say they targeted these public officials or FBI agents, what would they do? Did you receive the spare camera yet?. And I think the Intercept geolocated that photo and determined it was Erik Prince's ranch. Prince might have approached for money for Mr. Seddons venture besides Ms. Gore. The Intercept, however, wants the complaint dismissed. Good stuff, Mr. Seddon wrote back. GOLDMAN: The Georgetown house in D.C. was used as a base to, you know, essentially launch these undercover operations in the summer of '18, I guess, into the fall and maybe later. There was a massacre at a plaza in Iraq. We know that because Glenn put it up on his Instagram account. And this website is devoted to revealing the identities of Project Veritas operatives. - were directed to make them or reimbursed for them, then that's a potential crime. But "one of the most brazen operations of the campaign" was an attempt to take down H.R. One February 2019 report said that a new undercover will be joining the team and tasked with targeting Mr. Harshman. He said that numerous sources were coming to the group providing confidential documents, insights into internal processes and wearing hidden cameras to expose corruption and misconduct.. He was asked whether he had provided any of the groups secret recordings of Democracy Partners to the Republican National Committee or any member of the Trump family. And so, you know, I can't tell you right now it hasn't, that somebody else isn't doing this. The Defense Department didn't go for it. Presented with the details of the operation, Ledeen told the Times she was just a messenger, "not part of a plot.". That includes a pair of donations he made in March and October, in which he apparently listed his address as a post office box in Middleburg, Virginia. And that was their logo. And I think the end goal was make a video and, if necessary, try to get the White House to fire McMaster. There was eventually litigation about that, wasn't there? I mean, if the idea was to get inside information, which would be useful to, you know, Republicans and conservatives, did they succeed? DAVIES: Right. How Times reporters cover politics. Its among a number of issues and motions that will have to be sorted out before a judge or jury would consider the accuracy of The Intercepts April article. She actually got a contract fundraising gig with the Democrats, right? DAVIES: But the idea was that these public officials or FBI agents were secretly - they were part of the deep state. GOLDMAN: I was going to say, you know, talking to Republicans, moderate Republicans, I mean, moderate - these guys are pretty conservative, by the way - when we're describing it as moderate Republicans they were targeting. The Intercept, however, has stood behind its reporting and has described the suit as an improper attempt to learn the identity of its sources. They were certainly using attractive women to lure people out on dates. No one tells Project Veritas who or what to investigate, he said. And they would secretly record them, you know, and create content and then eventually, you know, release a video, like they did in several instances. One of the documents indicates that Marti Halverson, a former Wyoming state lawmaker, provided a list of people for the operatives to target. They broke into the DNC. That got a lot of attention, was investigated by Robert Mueller. So while Times staff members may vote, they are not allowed to endorse or campaign for candidates or political causes.
